Who says family photos need golden hour?

I love golden hour. That soft, warm light, a little glow around the hair, everything feeling a bit gentler. There’s a reason we love it.

But look at these colours. Proper blue skies. Punchy red jumpers. Bright green grass. The kind of colour that makes you stop scrolling.

There’s room for this kind of family photography too. Bright sun, stronger shadows, a little flash and plenty of energy. You don’t always have to wait for the sun to soften before making photos you love.

Golden hour or mid-morning?

Golden hour is the light shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the sun sits low in the sky. It can give us that warm, soft look with long shadows and a lovely glow. If that’s the feeling you’re drawn to, we can absolutely plan around it.

Mid-morning has a different personality. The sun is higher, the light is more direct and the shadows have a stronger edge. There can be a bit more squinting. But there’s also a crispness and a punch to the photos that I really enjoy.

Blue skies look properly blue. Reds stand out. Sunlit grass feels almost electric. With the right exposure and a thoughtful edit, those colours can feel rich and vibrant without looking overdone.

A little flash, a pair of sunnies

Yes, I sometimes use flash when the sun is already out. It can lift shadows on faces and help balance the people in the photograph with a bright background. I like the little bit of pop it can bring, too.

And bring the sunnies if you love wearing them. They help with the squinting and add a relaxed, playful feel. They won’t soften the shadows themselves — that’s where I work with the light, our angle and, when it suits the photo, a little flash.

We don’t need everyone staring straight into the sun. There’s room to turn, move, find a patch of shade or take a break. Comfort comes first, especially with little ones.

The light is only part of it

Look through these photos and you’ll see running, cuddles, sand flying through the air and little hands finding things on the beach. The colour is bold, but the moments are still what make the pictures.

That’s what I want from a family session: enough guidance to help you feel comfortable, then space for your people to be themselves. A bit of movement. A bit of mess. Something that feels like your family.

Let’s find the right time for your family

When we plan your session, we’ll talk about the look you love, the location, the season and how your day actually works. Naps and happy kids matter too. We can work out whether softer light or a brighter morning suits you best.

If you’re looking for family photography in Sydney or on the Northern Beaches, you don’t need to have all of that figured out before getting in touch.

Soft and golden or bright and bold? Tell me what you’re drawn to and let’s plan your session.
